How Cells Live Or Die

Scientists have shown that when under stress, cells activate signals that lead to what has been called the "unfolded protein response" or UPR.

This response signals the cell to proceed in one of two pathways. One pathway leads to adaptation, while the other leads to apoptosis or cell death.

The stress is caused by a buildup of improperly folded or non-folded proteins in a cell. This condition is often a result of a genetic defect and can lead to disorders such as Parkinson disease.

In the study, the researchers treated cells with chemicals that did not allow the proteins to fold. They found that at low chemical levels, the cells adapted, the amount of unfolded proteins decreased, and the cells became resistant to further stress. At high chemical levels however, the cells died.

Protein

Proteins are very important molecules in our cells. They are involved in virtually all cell functions. Each protein within the body has a specific function.

Some proteins are involved in structural support, while others are involved in bodily movement, or in defense against germs.

Below is a list of a few types of proteins and their functions:

* Antibodies - defend the body from germs.
* Contractile Proteins - responsible for movement.
* Enzymes - speed up chemical reactions.
* Storage Proteins - store amino acids.

The Advantages Of Fruit

5 DON'TS DURING SLEEP

A man can go two weeks without eating. But if he doesn't rest at all, he can only survive for one week. Sleeping provides us the time to rest our internal organs, eyes and brains. Poor sleep quality can cause internal damage to our internal organs and brains. Therefore, sleeping is very important to us. If you wish to have a long life and stay healthy, please take note of the advice below.

Scientists in America have discovered those that wear bras for more than 12 hours have a higher risk of getting breast cancer. Well the same goes down there for guys..... imagine having a prostectic part. So go to bed without it.

DON'T SLEEP WITH MOBILE PHONE NEXT TO YOU
Putting the phone beside your bed or anywhere near you is not encouraged. Though some of us will use phones as alarm clocks, but please put the phone as far as possible. Scientists have proved that electrical items including mobile phone and television sets emit magnetic waves when used. These waves can cause disruptions to our nervous system. Therefore if you need to put your mobile phone near you, switch it off first.

DON'T SLEEP WITH MAKE-UP ON
People who sleep with make up might have skin problems in the long run. Sleeping with make up will cause the skin to have difficulty in breathing and problem in perspiring. You will also need a much longer time to go into deep sleep.
